Description
[JB] Stone obelisk, with three bands of vermiculated rustication. By James Deane, 1760. Erected in Colchester High Street by Charles Gray and painted with mileages to London and other towns; removed in 1858 and re-erected as a memorial to Mary Ann Wire (died 1889) by her husband Charles Wire, an uncle of Colchester antiquarian, diarist and watch-maker William Wire.
An unusual object, designed by one of Colchester's best-known 18th-century architects. [JB]
