Description

LAYER MARNEY LAYER BRETON ROAD 1. 5214 Dukes Farmhouse TL 91 NW 16/26 23.6.52 II* 2. C16 and C17 in red brick with flared headers, and red plain tile roof. Gabled cross wing at west end. Two storeys and attics. 1:3 window range, early C19 vertical sliding, double hung sashes with glazing bars, and margin sashes, in gauged arches. Cross wing has 2 original windows with 5 transomed lights and moulded brick jambs and mullions. Similar single light windows on west side. Moulded string course to cross wing. Main range has early C19 Tuscan porch with columns and moulded; fluted, pilasters, flanked by small C19 windows in gauged arches. Remains of early C18 doorcase Pith moulded architraves. Three hipped dormers. Later extensions at rear. Internally are original moulded beam, doors and some late C16 glass with a Tudor Rose and the initials ER. Fine C16 fireplaces at ground and first floor. Early Cl7 panelling in situ. Early C17 doors with original ironmongery. Early C18 panelling, moulded cornices and doors. Early C19 staircase with stick balusters. Main roof is framed side purlin. C16 wing is the remains of a large house, formerly extending to the west. Originally moated, now filled. (RCHM 3).
