Full Description

During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 and 1984-5 (ECC337), a Roman corn-drying oven was discovered within an area of cultivation (MCC855) in Insula 35. The oven was cut into cultivated soil overlying an earlier stone-built granary building (MCC925). The oven was a free-standing structure built of broken tile bonded with sandy clay. The backfill contained several sherds of Anglo-Saxon pottery dated to the 6th or 7th centuries (see MCC2592), suggesting that it survived as a ruin until the 6th or 7th century when the remains were finally demolished or collapsed.<1>
