During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 and 1984-5 (ECC337), a Roman building (CAT Building 117) was excavated. The building was situated on the south side of Insula 34 and consisted of two rooms separated by an east-west passage. Outside the building at the foot of the east wall was a drainage gully beyond which was a gravelled yard. Some of the buildings foundations had been re-used or replaced by the foundations of a later building on the site (MCC918). These were robbed-out in post Roman times whilst the buildings other foundations were robbed following its demolition and prior to the construction of MCC918. The building had one floor of sandy clay and one of mortar made with chips of septaria. The room with the sandy clay floor had a raised surface or 'platform' along two of its sides which was cut into by a rectangular pit. This room also contained an oven which environmental sampling suggested had been used for baking or drying grain. The passage also had a floor of sandy clay.<1>
