During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 and 1984-5 (ECC337), a Roman timber-framed building (CAT Building 108) was examined. The building was mainly identified through distinctive gravel-packed pits 'which were a constructional feature of many of the buildings erected in Flavian Colchester'.

On average each pit was 0.6 to 0.9m square and up to 0.9m deep. Many formed rows where the pits were roughly spaced at 2.0 to 2.5m intervals. The frontage of this building was shown by a series of adjacent pits. A patch of rubble and tile to the east of these may have been the remains of a foundation. The west wall was represented by three pits. The building was divided internally by a wall on the line of four pits. A floor was represented by a layer of gravel. This was cut by many stake holes and sealed a hearth. Also in the southern room were seven shallow pits and part of a possible rubble-filled foundation. The eastern limit of the building was obscure.<1>
