Full Description

During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 and 1984-5 (ECC337), a Roman timber-framed building (CAT Building 102) was discovered situated on the south side of an east-west street (MON520) and to the east of the former via principalis (MCC760).
Interpretation of the building remains was complicated by the fact that the relevant remains had been largely removed by machine stripping.
The position of the frontage wall of this, and three other buildings (see MCC863, MCC865, MCC860) was indicated by a series of pits for posts. There was no clear evidence to suggest the footway (MCC788) between the frontage wall and the street had been an integral part of the buildings.
The probable position of the buildings east wall was shown by a line of three slots, one of which appears to have had a gravel packed foundation.<1>
