Full Description
12th century church, now demolished
The church of St Leonard's was established by the early 12th century when Eudes the sewer (c.1120) gave a share of its tithes to St John's Abbey. The medieval church was demolished in 1820. It comprised of a chancel, a nave with north chapel or transept, a timbered north porch, a vestry, and a boarded west bellcot with shingled spire. The church and bellcot were in ruins in 1600.<1>
The RCHME survey of St Leonard's Church (19th century building) records that the original church was located several yards to the north. The more recent church contains a number of objects from the original structure, details given in description. <2>
