During the excavations at the Gilberd School in 1984-5, evidence for later Roman activity in the area took the form of a small building (CAT Building 138), constructed near the north-east corner of Insula 17a and probably fronting on to the north-south street (MCC346).

No definite remains of walls existed along the south or west sides but the excavators thought that the building probably consisted of two rooms with a presumed timber-framed superstructure resting on shallow, mainly robbed, stone-and -mortar foundations. Room 1 contained three post pads and the eastern foundation of Room 2 survived in situ. A timber drain, with surviving traces of decayed timber, extended from Room 2 into what was probably an open area to the east.

A patch of gravel surfacing to the west of the building may have formed a yard surface (MCC341). The gravel sealed a dump layer containing a coin of Carausius (AD 286-293). The buildings foundations had been extensively robbed, probably during the 12th to 13th centuries (See MCC341).<1>
