Full Description

During excavations at Culver Street between 981-2 & 1984-5 (ECC337), prehistoric pottery and flints were found including large fragments of Neolithic Grooved Ware pots and a large water-worn stone, possibly a rubbing-stone from a quern found in a pit (MCC741). These were apparently deposited as a ritual and are indicative of an occupation site. There was also a scatter of flints and pottery ranging in date from Neolithic to Middle Iron Age. Much of the material was recovered from the cover loam.

Within the backfill of a late Roman corn drying oven (MCC926), there were eight sherds of vegetable -tempered Anglo-Saxon pottery dating to the 6th or 7th centuries.

About 150 sherds of Anglo-Saxon grass-tempered pottery were recovered from the lower and upper layers of sunken area of an Anglo-Saxon hut (MCC928). A further 15 sherds were recovered from elsewhere on the site in residual contexts. A decorated Anglo-Saxon antler comb lay on the hut floor and a copper-alloy ringed pin of probable 7th-century date came from the upper layer.<1>

Small rolled flake (site E SF1.81.2522) must be Palaeolithic on the grounds of its condition.
Two blades (one being made into a scraper) and broken blade (SF1.81.2648) are of Mesolithic type and most unlikely to belong to any other later industry.
Flake axe possibly Mesolithic
Three scrapers of Neolithic form.
Palaeolithic hand axe (Period 3 dump on Site G) a typical pointed hand-axe of an Acheulian Lower Palaeolithic industry.<2>

Also Thetford-type ware?
