Full Description

A watching brief was held in July 1985 during the construction of a new building on the site of the bus stations old booking office at 31 Queen Street. Construction of the new building involved the digging of ten holes in which were observed tessellated and other floors, and robbed and un-robbed foundations of Roman date. The highest surviving Roman deposits were the tessellated floors which occurred at a depth of 1.0m. The natural was encountered at between 1.4m and 1.6m.<1>
