Full Description

One of two tile-lined graves (along with MCC1651) partly exposed at the base of one of the trenches dug during the construction of houses in the garden of St Mary's Cottage, Church Walk (to the south of St Mary's Churchyard MCC411).<1>

An excavation in 1962, to the west of this site (see ECC670) recovered a number of 'Christian burials' in stone and mortar cists. 'These possibly date to the 12th or 13th centuries AD. And appear to be contemporary with an earlier church of St. Mary which stood to the south of the present building'.<2>

According to Rodwell the technique of using rough lumps of tile and stone to line the graves 'is indicative of a pre-Conquest date, and may well go back to the middle Saxon period'.<3>
