Full Description

A north-south Roman ditch was discovered during excavations at Castle Gardens in 1978 (ECC566). The contained pottery of the 3rd and 4th centuries and cut a pit dated to between c.AD 150-250. The ditch appeared to have been deliberately backfilled and may have been levelled when the late Roman rampart (MCC1493) was built.<1>
