Full Description

A north-south Roman street was discovered during groundwork for a new day nursery in the grounds of East Hill House. The street was revealed during a machine strip when a patch of metalling was found in the south-east corner of the main trench. The metalling was probably part of a north-south intervallum road behind the town walls rampart (MCC1170). The western edge of the street was about 9m out from the line of the inner face of the town wall (MCC859), 'and matches closely the position of the corresponding street found on the opposite side of town at St Mary' Rectory'.<1> (see ECC661 and MCC1640).
