During the laying of a sewer pipe in Castle Park in 1983 (ECC375), observations were made of an north-south Roman wall foundation. The foundation was approximately 0.5 - 0.6m wide and at least 1.0m deep, being cut into the subsoil. It was of standard stone-and-mortar construction and consisted of septaria blocks with some tile set in a yellowish-white mortar. Immediately beyond the edge of the trench the foundation met a second foundation aligned east-west (see MCC1280). These two foundations together with another east-west foundation situated 7m to the south (see MCC1282), and possibly a gravelled surface (MCC1284), may have formed the remains of a building. The gravelled surface sealed a substantial deposit of sandy clay loam make-up material which the foundation was cut into. The remains of an infant burial (MCC1283) were recovered from this deposit immediately to the west of MCC1282. A further layer of sandy clay loam sealed the foundations and gravelled surface and may have represented demolition debris from the building.<1>
