During excavations at the Cups Hotel site in 1973-4 (ECC346) a late medieval building was discovered (CAT Building 156). The building was probably erected in the 15th century. It was timber-framed with ground-plates laid directly on the soil. Parts of three ground-plates survived which were burnt indicating that the building had been destroyed by fire. The building had floors of sandy clay, and possibly two hearths or ovens. A well located nearby may have been associated with the building (see MCC1211).<1>
