During excavations at Culver Street between 1981-2 and 1984-5 (ECC337) remains of an east-west Roman street were discovered situated along the south side of Insula 34. The street was built directly on top of Boudican destruction debris overlying the remains of an earlier building (MCC759). The Boudican debris was shallow 'suggesting that it had been mainly stripped off before it was laid'. The street was constructed of gravel in a sandy matrix, 200mm deep at centre and about 20mm deep at the edges which was sealed by up to 200 mm of road silt. During the construction of the town wall c.65/80 AD, a dump of material was spread over the northern edge of the street. The street may have been constructed to assist in the construction of the town wall and as such was only a temporary structure. A new road was laid on top of the dump material (see MCC1167).<1>
