Description
In 1938 a trench was cut inwards from the broken end of the Town Wall across the line of the rampart (to the north of the Balkern Gate, now in the grounds of the Sixth Form Centre). The excavation revealed a faced section of wall and part of an internal tower. Quantities of Roman pottery were recovered and a pattern of small post holes observed, speculated to be part of a foundation for a wooden rampart walk.<1><2> A handwritten note in the paper SMR details the finds with form types and section drawings.<3><4> The trench was apparently used as an air raid shelter during WWII.<5><6>
