Description

Investigations were undertaken at the rear of Crouched Friars by members of the Colchester Archaeological Group. In the late summer of 1983 a trial trench was dug revealing Roman pottery but no features. From April to July, 1984 a larger excavation was undertaken in another part of the property. Trial holes were dug at the western end of the walled garden and at one hole approximately 18 metres from the stable-block the metalling of a road was uncovered. An extension of the trench was then made to the east but proved inconclusive.<1> Colchester Archaeological Trusts Reference number is 0/84.<2>
