Description

DOE survey of No's 23 & 24 High Street. Grade II. Original building an important late 16th century one with open courtyard at the rear. Extensively altered, but a number of original features remain. The roofs are tiled. The front was remodelled in the C18 and has 3 storeys, 4 window range of double hung sashes with glazing bars, central contemporary ? water head and pipe. Ground floor shops & offices. At the rear are 2 hipped gables & the upper storey projects. A wing extending S & then the W end of the rear elevation contains a ground floor room with late C16 panelling & mid C17 overmantel, in this wing and also a late C16 staircase with the balister of the south side painted (contemp.) in the plaster of the wall, & there is a beam with the date 1597 & a merchants mark. <1>
