Rescue excavation in 1973-4 following the demolition of the former Cups Hotel and before construction of Greytown House. Much of the archaeology had been already removed by construction of cellars for the Cups Hotel. A main north-south strip about 6m wide was available for examination and revealed part of a burnt Roman building, part of a small Roman house, Anglo-Saxon activity, medieval pits and robber trenches, parts of two medieval houses fronting the high street and the Cups Hotel itself. Further discoveries were made during the contractor's bulk excavations for the new basement and a major east-west section was exposed when the contractor removed the cellar walls underneath the southern frontage of the modern building.<1>
