Description

A watching brief was held for phase 1 of the redevelopment at the Balkerne gardens. The development was watched at three stages of progress. In March 1977 the location and stratigraphy of five trial holes dug by engineers was noted (Stage 1). In August 1977, groundwork for an extension to the rest home took place and involved the reduction of the site ground level by about 0.15m over the entire site (Stage 2). This was followed by excavation of 0.6m wide foundation trenches to a depth typically of 2.0m from the reduced level. See ECC1487 for stage 3. On the Rest Home (Freda Gunton Lodge) extension site Roman foundations, a Roman gravel yard and a Roman coin hoard were encountered. <1>
