Description

A watching brief was undertaken during the groundworks for a new building on the site of the old booking office (31 Queen Street) of the former bus station. Construction of the new building involved the excavation of ten holes, in which were observed tessellated and other floors, and robbed and unrobbed foundations of Roman date. The highest surviving Roman deposits were the tessellated floors which occurred at a depth of 1.0m. The natural was encountered at between 1.4m and 1.6m.<1>
