Description

A watching brief was held during the construction of an office block (Lloyds of London Building) between November 1984 and April 1985. The site was visited regularly but no archaeological deposits were observed. Deposits noted included black topsoil, London Clay and sand and gravel but all appeared to be natural in origin. The site was covered by a thick layer of black topsoil. During initial site work areas of gravel were noted 'a couple of feet below the surface' by the JCB driver in the centre and north-west corner of the site. "This may have been Roman street metalling".<1>
