Description
A watching brief was held during the construction of new factory units at the Cowdray Centre. A mound in the north-west corner of the site up to 3 metres high was removed This was upcast from a brick-making quarry. The site was trenched for new drains and foundations etc. Towards the centre of the site there is a layer of gravel and sand containing brick fragments, mortar and other debris over a layer of topsoil mixed with clay. This all probably derived from the brickworks or the quarry. There were no clear indications of the gravel quarry or of any Roman burials.<1>
