Description

A watching brief was held during the laying of a pipe trench. The trench was about 0.8m to 1.0m deep and was placed along the north gutter of East Hill and the east end of the High Street. Opposite All Saints House the trench was cut into modern tarmac over a bed of reinforced concrete which in turn overlay layers of stone and gravel in a sandy matrix. Under the last was orange? Natural sand and gravel. The ground level here was lower than to the north or south suggesting that the earlier metalling had been removed to improve the gradient.<1>
