Description

A watching brief was held during the demolition of two cottages and the construction of a new building. Construction work involved the removal of 0.6-1.0m of soil over almost all of the site (i.e. down to about 0.6m below the level of the present pavement.) The material removed was probably topsoil. A concentration of 17th century pottery came from the north-west corner of the site implying that the soil included the tops of pits. Nothing else significant was observed and it appears that the Roman deposits were left undisturbed.<1>
