Description

A watching brief was held during the construction of houses in the garden of St Mary's Cottage, Church Walk. The foundation trenches were 1.5m deep. The western half of the site was occupied mainly by topsoil and redeposited Roman material and clearly had been much interfered with by pit digging. Of note, however was a scatter of human bone, mainly in the western half of the site, and two tile-lined graves partly exposed at the base of one of the trenches. They belong to the same group of rubble-lined graves found by B.P. Blake in 1962-3 (ECC1453). Near the centre of the site lay a small pit with burnt sides. Two sherds of grass-tempered pottery indicated Anglo-Saxon activity on the site. Some robbed out foundations, a tessellated pavement, a mortar pavement and a Roman tile drain pointed to a Roman house. A well-preserved military plinth lay on the eastern side of the site. The wall had burnt floors to either side sealed by Boudican debris.<1>
