Description

A watching brief was maintained during the construction of an extension to the rear of the National Westminster Bank, No. 25 High Street. Five test pits were dug on behalf of the architects and one bore hole. Nothing of any archaeological significance was observed in any of them. Trench 1 was dug to a maximum depth of 1.4m and cut only dark topsoil. Trench 2 was 0.3m deep and cut recent topsoil. Trench 3 was 1.0m deep and cut through redeposited topsoil. Trench 4 was 0.6m deep and was dug to examine the nature of the foundation of the wall on the east boundary. This contained fragments of 16th/17th brick and two pieces of septaria with ?Roman mortar still adhering. Trench 5 cut only disturbed topsoil.<1>
