Description

A watching brief was maintained during the construction of an office block situated between the Odeon Cinema on Crouch Street and the Southway dual carriageway. "Pile holes and trenches indicated topsoil for a depth of 1.4 metres with clay at 2.5 metres. A large trench, 4.5 metre x 12.0 metre and 3.0 metres deep was dug near the western end of the site. The hole was cut into dark topsoil apart from the western end which cut through some sand. The latter appeared to be redeposited. All finds seemed to be 19th or 20th century. The underlying sand was sterile".<1>
