Description

A watching brief was maintained during the construction of a block of four flats. A total of five visits were made but no significant features were recorded. "The 2 metre deep foundation trenches revealed a uniform, very dark greyish brown, sandy loam topsoil which extended from the present surface to a depth of approximately 1.0 metres. Below this point it gradually became lighter and sandier eventually merging with natural sand at a depth of 1.5 metres. The evidence from these trenches suggests that this small area was subject to an uninterrupted accumulation of topsoil from earliest times to the 20th century".<1>
