Full Description
Haynes Green (spelled Heyns Green) is originally shown on the 1777 Chapman & Andre Historic Map, located between two historic woodland areas of Pods Wood and Layer Wood, just west of the settlement of Layer Marney. The green is shown on this map to be a triangular-shaped green to the north of Haynes Green Farm, with a thin linear segment extending east and south-east along the southern edge of Layer Wood, to Stockhouse Farm. The map shows what appears to be a small collection of buildings, along the edge of the green.<1>
Haynes Green is then shown on the County Series at 1:2500 Scale Epoch 1 Historic Map (1874-1887), which shows part of the green disappearing from along the southern edge of Layer Wood, leaving the more compact, triangular landscape for the green. Epoch 1 clearly shows the small collection of farm buildings that seemed to appear on the older map, still situated along the edge of the green, and many of these buildings still remain. One of them is a Grade II C16 listed building of Haynes Green Farmhouse [MCC4350](LB Number: 1223970). On this map the name is shown to be the same as the modern day spelling, Haynes Green. <2>
